‘Hold Your Hot Tears’ is a letter in the guise of a poster. Assuming coincidences as warrants to follow disparate connections, the work unravelled as a virtual dérive. The catalyst was an uncannily familiar drawing featured in my friend’s diary. A deep dive online revealed the image to be an ironic sketch si ma va did years earlier at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art at a Matisse retrospective where the public was invited to use the gallery’s iPads to record themselves drawing. What ensued was correspondence between the artist and a publisher, art dealers, galleries, institutions and the authority and authenticator of Matisse artworks, seeking understanding of their perspectives that inform their take on authenticity, integrity and value.
